Orange County Traffic Ticket Guide

After a traffic ticket in Orange County, the Superior Court mails a notice with your due date, and the ticket is paid, sent to traffic school or contested at the justice center printed on it. The Traffic Ticket Attorneys fight traffic tickets in all four Orange County justice centers that hear them, from our office in Glendale, and the first consultation is free.

What Happens After a Ticket in Orange County

The court sets out these steps on its Traffic General Information and Contesting Your Citation pages.

The Notice and the Due Date

The court may mail a violation information notice to the address on the ticket within 21 days of the date the ticket was issued. It can show the bail amount, whether a court appearance is mandatory, whether the ticket is eligible for traffic school, and the due date. The court states that not receiving the notice is not a legal excuse for missing the due date. The clerk can grant one 45-day extension and then a second 30-day extension before any failure-to-appear action.

Paying the Ticket

The court takes payment online on or before the original due date, by phone at (657) 622-8459, by text using the court’s OC Pay number, by mail, and in person at the four justice centers.

Traffic School

The clerk can approve an 8-hour traffic school course for an infraction reported to the DMV. The court lists these cases as not eligible: a violation worth more than one point, a traffic school violation within the previous 18 months, alcohol or drug violations, speeding more than 25 mph over the limit, and a ticket received while driving a commercial vehicle. A commercial driver cited in a personal vehicle can attend: the conviction is not masked on the record, and no point is added (the court’s Traffic School page).

Contesting the Ticket

To contest an infraction, the driver posts bail in the amount of the ticket and enters a not guilty plea. The court offers three routes:

  • A reserved court date. Seeing a judicial officer at any Orange County court requires a reserved date. The citing officer is not present at that first hearing.
  • A court trial. The court subpoenas the officer who wrote the ticket.
  • A trial by written declaration. The driver and the officer each submit a written statement, and the court decides on the papers. The request is made in person or in writing, with the bail deposit.

A misdemeanor charge, such as driving on a suspended license, is contested in court in person.

Appearing by Video

Orange County offers remote appearance on Zoom for traffic hearings, in the department named on the court’s notice. A remote appearance still requires a reserved date (the court’s Traffic Remote Appearance Info page).

Orange County Requires a Reserved Date to See a Judge

Orange County runs traffic through its own systems, and three of them shape every case:

  • A reserved date. No driver walks in to see a judge on a traffic ticket. The date is reserved online at any hour or at a justice center counter on weekdays (the court’s Reserve a Court Date page).
  • The OC Pay number. The court’s phone, text and online services identify each ticket by the OC Pay number on the court’s notice (the court’s Traffic page).
  • My Court Portal. The court’s portal handles payments, extensions, payment plans, proof of correction and court date reservations, and can send reminders by email or text.

Traffic cases stay in Orange County. The court states that a ticket must be heard in the county where it was issued (the court’s Traffic Ticket self-help page).

Questions About Orange County Traffic Tickets

Which Courthouse Is on My Ticket?

The court location is printed at the bottom of the ticket, and the court’s notice repeats it. Orange County tickets go to one of four justice centers, according to the city where the ticket was written: Central in Santa Ana, Harbor in Newport Beach, North in Fullerton or West in Westminster. The table above lists the cities each one hears.

Can I Go to Traffic School for This Ticket?

The court’s notice says whether the ticket is eligible. Under the court’s rules, the clerk can approve traffic school for a Vehicle Code infraction reported to the DMV that carries no more than one point, when there was no traffic school violation in the previous 18 months. Speeding more than 25 mph over the limit, alcohol or drug violations and tickets received in a commercial vehicle are not eligible.

Do I Have to Appear in Person?

Many infractions can be paid, sent to traffic school or contested by written declaration without a court appearance. Orange County also allows remote appearance on Zoom for traffic hearings. A misdemeanor, or a ticket the court marks as a mandatory appearance, is heard in court.

What Happens If I Miss My Court Date?

The court lists the consequences on its Appearances in Court page: a warrant, an added failure-to-appear charge, a hold with the DMV that can block a license renewal or lead to a suspension, a civil assessment under Penal Code section 1214.1, and referral to collections. Our failure to appear page explains how these cases work.
