What Happens After a Ticket in Ventura County
The court sets out these steps on its Criminal/Traffic Information page and its Frequently Asked Questions.
The Notice and the Due Date
The court mails a reminder notice to the address on the ticket about two weeks after the ticket is written. It shows the case balance, the options and the due date. The court states that the date on a ticket is the due date for responding to it. A 28-day extension is available online or at any court location.
Paying the Ticket
The court takes payment online by card at any hour, by mail in the envelope sent with the reminder notice, and in person at the Hall of Justice, the East County Courthouse or the Juvenile Justice Center. Monthly payments are arranged through the state’s MyCitations service.
Traffic School
The reminder notice shows whether the ticket appears eligible for traffic school, and the court states that eligibility is the driver’s responsibility. Traffic school can mask one citation in 18 months. It is not available to a commercial license holder cited while driving a commercial vehicle. Once the fine and the court’s traffic school fees are paid, the driver has six weeks to complete an approved school (the court’s Traffic School Information page).
Contesting the Ticket
The court offers these routes:
- An arraignment. It is scheduled on or before the due date, by calling the clerk or at the walk-up window. A ticket the reminder notice marks “MANDATORY APPEARANCE” is heard in court by the due date.
- A not guilty plea. By mail, it needs the bail deposit and the court’s written not guilty form. At the clerk’s counter, the clerk may release the driver on a written promise to appear without the bail, and the trial is set within 45 days.
- A court trial. The driver or the driver’s attorney appears, and the officer who wrote the ticket is also present.
- A trial by written declaration. Under Vehicle Code section 40902, the driver files form TR-205 with the full bail and a written statement. The court mails its decision within 45 days, and a driver who disagrees can ask for a new trial within 20 days.
Appearing by Video
Ventura County does not allow remote appearance in traffic matters. The court states: “Remote appearance is not permitted for traffic or truancy matters” (the court’s Remote Appearances page).
Ventura County Splits Traffic Trials Between Oxnard and Simi Valley
Ventura County holds a traffic case in up to two places: the arraignment at Ventura or Simi Valley, and the trial at the courthouse for the case’s half of the county. The court states: “Court trials for west county jurisdiction cases are held at the Juvenile Courthouse in Oxnard. Court Trials for east county jurisdiction cases are held at the East County Courthouse in Simi Valley on Tuesdays.”
The three courthouses also keep different hours for traffic:
- Hall of Justice, Ventura: walk-up payment windows Monday to Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.; traffic court Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday at 1:30 p.m.
- East County Courthouse, Simi Valley: walk-up windows Monday and Tuesday only, 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.; traffic court on Tuesdays.
- Juvenile Justice Center, Oxnard: no outdoor window; payments inside, Monday to Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.
Night court for infractions is held on the second Thursday of each month at the Hall of Justice in Ventura, by reservation at (805) 289-8545.

Questions About Ventura County Traffic Tickets
Which Courthouse Is on My Ticket?
The ticket and the court’s reminder notice show the court and the due date. Arraignments are held at the Hall of Justice in Ventura or the East County Courthouse in Simi Valley. Court trials go to Oxnard for west county cases and to Simi Valley for east county cases. The clerk at (805) 289-8545 confirms where a case is set.
Can I Go to Traffic School for This Ticket?
The reminder notice shows whether the ticket appears eligible. Traffic school can mask one citation in any 18 months, and it is not available to a commercial license holder cited in a commercial vehicle. Traffic school is requested by paying the fine and the court’s traffic school fees, and the course is due within six weeks.
Do I Have to Appear in Person?
Many infractions can be paid, sent to traffic school or contested by written declaration by mail. A court trial is held in person: the court states that the driver or the driver’s attorney must appear, and Ventura County does not allow remote appearance for traffic. A ticket marked “MANDATORY APPEARANCE” is heard in court.
What Happens If I Miss My Court Date?
The court states that a judicial officer may add a $100 civil assessment under Penal Code section 1214.1 instead of issuing a bench warrant. A missed date can also put a hold on the driver’s license with the DMV, which the court clears once the ticket is paid. Unpaid court debt is referred to the court’s collection agency. Our failure to appear page explains how these cases work.
